The person
behind the music
27 years behind the booth. Still the first one to arrive and the last to leave.
It started with music - long before the mic
I was around 12 or 13 when music started to take over. Our home was always full of it - the radio, stacks of CDs, my parents' records: Elvis, Motown, the Bee Gees. Some of my best memories are tied to that sound. Then I heard MC Mario on the Club Mix on Mix 96, and something clicked. I'd also watch the older kids DJ school dances and was mesmerized - the mixing, the energy, watching a crowd lose it when the right song hit. I wanted in.
I started with what I had - a pair of Discmans and a Radio Shack mixer my dad helped me buy, playing Sweet 16s for friends and borrowing (and ruining) my parents' home theatre speakers. As the gigs got bigger, I had no choice but to rent proper gear.
My first paid gig came around 16 or 17 - an Italian 50th anniversary. I didn't speak the language and was still very shy behind the mic, so my dad stepped in and handled the announcements while I ran the music. That collaboration taught me more about reading a room than anything I'd done solo.
My first job was at a movie theater. On day one, I was handed a wireless mic and asked to introduce the film to a packed house. I froze. Looking back, it must have been fate — that mic found its way into my hands for a reason, and it quietly became a calling. Over the next few months I did it hundreds of times - packed holiday crowds meant thousands of people would see me every week. That repetition built something more useful than confidence: a real feel for what lands and what doesn't.
From there it was anything I could get - proms, community dances, galas, private parties. Always a bit terrified, always resolved to do an excellent job. I also DJed at the Vanier College radio station and worked every big school event I could get on. From there I played a few clubs around Montréal before landing my residency at Club Altitude 737 — and eventually the clubs gave way to something more personal.
